Before

There is a whole industry devoted to providing products and services to the public so that they can carry out their own repairs, improvements, and upgrades to their homes, gardens, and other possessions. We have been conditioned to think that we can do it all ourselves to save money and we are encouraged to continually change what we have by decorating, remodeling, and upgrading everything we own. Unfortunately most people are not skilled sufficiently to do a good job, so homes, gardens, and other projects are subjected to poor workmanship, leaving a trail of unsafe decks, unlevel counter tops, walls that aren't square, leaky pipes, uneven paint lines, and unsafe electrical work. Home Improvement is a significant contributor to economic growth. Many people don't keep up with maintenance and repair of their properties and possessions so they degrade over time and ultimately have to be disposed of.

After

No one owns homes, gardens, or other possessions in Nutopia. Everything is shared by all, and everything is properly constructed by the Central Construction Service and properly maintained by the Central Maintenance Service. People are not continually changing their homes, gardens, or other shared items just for the sake of it, but they can change them based on the Shared Item Schedule. People immediately report items that need maintenance such as stains, chips in walls, scratches in furniture, and other defects to the Central Maintenance Service who carry out the repair or replacement immediately.
