Throughout history human settlements were established next to a source of fresh water. Most towns and cities today have grown from an early settlement on the banks of a river. Fresh water is in short supply and many parts of the world are facing critical shortages. Many experts believe that declining water supplies might be a bigger problem than the shortage of oil in the coming decades. Even in the rest of the world, we face big problems because of our thirst for fresh water. Dams destroy the environment and rivers such as the Colorado River no longer even reach the ocean.

Seawater is abundant and our oceans cover approximately 70% of the Earth's surface. Desalination plants convert saline water in to drinkable fresh water and the best method of desalination is distillation because it completely reduces the widest range of drinking water contaminants. Desalination is accomplished simply by heating water until it becomes steam and cooling it to form droplets of water.

The only disadvantage to distillation desalination is the amount of energy required to heat the water. If power is not an issue then desalination plants can be located all around the world on the coastline and underground. There would be no impact on the environment and they would not be visible. We can get sufficient electrical power from the Geothermal Electric Power Plants and we can pipe the water to communities under ground. Desalination plants can provide Nutopia communities with abundant freshwater forever anywhere in the world.

Once the fresh water arrives at each Nutopia community it continues to flow in pipes through the Under Ground Network to all buildings. This water is used for sinks, showers, toilets, and irrigation systems, but drinking water is treated seperately to ensure that it is mineral rich, and this water is distributed in containers as part of the Central Food & Drink Service.

As mass production and distribution of desalinated fresh water replaces traditional fresh water from lakes, rivers, and acquifers, those sources can be restored to their natural state. Dams can be dismantled and rivers can go back to flowing to the oceans as nature intended in the first place.
