Fundamentals

There are many reasons for crime in our society today. If people do not have the means to support themselves and their families, they often turn to crime out of desperation. A society based on the accumulation of money as a way to get a better life will always encourage crime.

One of the fundamental principles of Nutopia is to make sure that all people have their basic needs met providing that they work only as needed by the community, and that work will always be made available to them. The amount of work required by each citizen in a Nutopia community is much less than today, so the stresses of long work days while still trying to take care of home and family are much less. When everyone in society has sufficient food, water, shelter, education, healthcare, and elder care, and free energy, transportation and communications, and they are given time to enjoy life, then the incidents of violence and crime are greatly reduced. It is of course human nature that some arguments, conflicts, and domestic violence will happen when human relationships are involved, but those incidents will be significantly less when all people are living happier lives and emotions such as envy and resentment do not cause tensions between citizens.

No one "owns" anything in Nutopia so there is no concept of money, property or possessions. There is nothing to steal and no reason to steal because nothing has any "value" and everyone has access to the same food, clothing, entertainment, and leisure pursuits, so crime such as robbery, break-ins, and theft are unheard of. The absence of harmful drugs and substances in the community and the limits on alcohol consumption also mean that the ubiquitous crimes caused by the use of drugs and alcohol today simply don't exist in Nutopia.
