Our advancements in science, technology, and computing over many centuries and especially over the last 50 years mean that there seems to be hardly anything that is beyond our reach. Our greatest minds are working on solving problems and coming up with new ideas all the time, but mostly it is part of the capitalist system which is driven by the pursuit of wealth. New breakthroughs in technology are celebrated because they support the supply and demand economy and they feed our insatiable desire for new gizmos, gadgets, and other consumer products. The new technologies take us further and further away from our human connection with other people and with nature, and make us more and more distant from each other, as we lose our face-to-face interpersonal social skills in favor of our computer-to-computer online skills, while at the same time the endless production of consumer goods means that we continue to destroy the natural world.

After

In Nutopia there is no mantra for continual economic growth and the pursuit of wealth. People work on tasks that are needed to keep the community functioning but there is no desire to design new things just to entice people in to wanting new products in their lives. Instead, people put forward ideas for things that they feel are needed or would benefit the community as a whole. The Guardian System allows everyone in the community to vote whether they would like proposed items to be developed or not.

The labor requirements of the Nutopia community are significantly less than that of the world we live in today so people work much less and have much more free time. However, people continue to be involved in learning, research, and development in the areas of science and technology to solve problems and to provide benefits for humanity. No one is working to come up with the next new product for the 30-second meaningless entertainment value for consumers, everything worked on is done so to bring about a better quality of life for all people and the advancement of our species for the long term. Looming problems which threaten us today like climate change, near earth asteroid collisions, and the next ice age are worked on instead of just ignored because they have no ROI.
