Our way of life is totally dependent on a capitalist system which demands that we keep producing and consuming goods and services to keep the precarious balance of people with jobs who spend money to keep the whole cycle going. The end result of all this is that we consume way more new items than we actually need and we upgrade and replace existing items when there really is no need to do so. Our advances in manufacturing and production means that we produce lower quality items at a much lower price which means that people mostly buy new rather than second hand, so our homes, gardens, garages, and sheds are now overflowing with products we have purchased.

One of the most visible signs of this over consumption is the birth of the multi-billion dollar industry of Self Storage. We literally are now unable to store any more items in our homes and offices so renting Self Storage spaces give us more room to store all our stuff. There are now even popular TV shows such as "Hoarders" and "Storage Wars" which illustrate just how widespread and severe the problem is today.

After

In Nutopia people don't own any possessions and they don't store anything they don't need. A typical home or office does not have any storage space such as cupboards, shelves, pantries, drawers, basements, garages, sheds, or any other storage space. Homes only have items that are needed all the time, and items which are not are requested, used, and returned to the Central Sharing Facility as needed.
