Before

Capitalism is all about the production and consumption of goods and we have become really good at it especially over the last 30 years. We are all participants in a system which makes us all work tirelessly to produce more and more goods and services, most of which we don't actually need, and which we are coerced in to buying by the endless bombardment of promotions and advertising showing us beautiful models, homes, and shiny things that we are powerless to resist. All this adds up to a world overflowing with products which pile up as we make impulse purchases and then replace them soon after because the next version or upgrade is on the market or because they break or become faulty.

Basements, attics, garages, and sheds in our homes and gardens today are filled to the brim with things we have purchased and accumulated which we are now done with because we are bored with them, we have outgrown them, or we have simply replaced them with the next new thing. We have built an entire multi-million dollar industry of Self Storage because so many people have now over-consumed to the point that even their big houses can no longer contain the things they have accumulated. There are even realty TV shows like "Hoarders" which highlights the plight of people who are unable to part with possessions, and the cumulative effect becomes a mountain of junk and garbage overtaking their home.

After

There are no possessions in Nutopia. No one owns anything from the moment they are born to the moment they die, they simply share items with everyone else in the community. When a person is assigned a home they can furnish it with items from the Central Sharing Facility and they can change items based on a Shared Item Schedule. People have a small collection of personal items such as basic clothes and shoes, toothbrush, and small personal memorabilia, which they carry with them in a Personal Items Container when they move to a different home, but everything else is shared. There is no build up of unwanted or unused items because items are requested, used, and then returned to the Central Sharing Facility where they are washed, cleaned, sanitized, and repaired if needed, ready for the next person to use. For example, a child's toy which is typically used for only a few months, is requested, played with, and then returned ready for the next child, instead of being put in a yard sale, or most likely ending up in a landfill.
