Most ordinary people fully understand that if they want to have shelter, food, water, education, healthcare, energy, and transportation then they need to contribute in some way, which is of course their labor. Historically there have been many abuses of the system whether it is people on welfare who are benefiting from the labor of others while not working themselves, or whether it is businesses laying off workers to maximize profits, thereby not giving people the opportunity to work in order that they may receive their fair share of the benefits of the community.

The most significant reason for unemployment today is that over the last 50 years we have made advances with our technology and computing power so that we can produce much more goods and services with much less human labor. Unfortunately society has not adapted to this new paradigm and instead of having full employment for all people who share the work but work less hours, we have some people employed with stagnant wages, some people unemployed, and all the benefits of technology having gone to the business owners and shareholders.

After

Nutopia acknowledges that people have to work in order that they can receive the benefits of the society as a whole, but they must also be offered the work in order that they may do so. The available work required to fulfill the needs of the community is shared by all in the community resulting in all citizens working and benefiting from the services of the community. Much less work is required in a Nutopia community because the needs of the people are served instead of the never-ending consumption of unnecessary products and services, so the shared work means that all people are working but they are working much less than in a capitalist society.
