Before
Our towns, cities, bridges, roads, and highways that connect them were all built using short term thinking. "Cost" is always the guiding factor in our world today and decisions are made to make sure that the project is on budget rather than it is best for the long term future. The use of cheaper or lower quality building materials, or hiring cheaper, less skillful labor are often the case, and the decision makers are typically only interested in their term in office or getting reelected, not the benefits to society in the long term. Energy efficiency typically has a long term ROI so it is an easy line item to eliminate if the budget needs to be reduced for it to get approved.
With that type of mentality it is no wonder that much of our infrastructure is crumbling. Once a project has been completed its condition gradually deteriorates because the "cost" of properly maintaining our buildings, roads, and bridges is an easy budget item to reduce or eliminate, but lack of regular maintenance means accelerated deterioration. Our roads have pot holes and frost heaves due to poor or inadequate foundation, our bridges are rusting, our buildings are decaying because cracked concrete is not repaired as soon as it appears, untreated or unpainted wood is rotting, and the use of cheaper windows, doors, and roofs means that they need to be replaced after only a few decades.
Our existing infrastructure and buildings have been built layer upon layer over centuries, so we have leaking sewage and water pipes, and buildings which are infested with insects, and vermin, and often with dangerous rotting wooden frames, and hazardous mold from water damage. Houses have been changed by unskilled home owners and tenants over the years with their home improvements, additions, and DIY projects.
After
In Nutopia there is no concept of cost, ROI, or budget. A project is designed to last for centuries or millennium because it does not belong to any one individual or group, it is being built for the citizens of the community now and the future. No corners are cut, energy efficiency and the impact on the environment are of paramount importance, and the most suitable and highest quality building materials are always used. Everything is built with a modular design so that structures can be easily repaired by fixing small components rather than the whole thing having to be replaced.
As soon as something is built in Nutopia every piece of it goes on to a regular maintenance plan. The structure is always in good condition and problems are reported and fixed immediately so that its overall condition will never deteriorate.
Nutopia communities are built with a clean slate so that everything is based on modern technology and best of breed practices.
