Before

The world we live in is a very dangerous place. Crime is rampant, gangs overrun our cities, guns and gun violence is everywhere, and the drug trade keeps millions of vulnerable people trapped in a life of poverty, homelessness, and desperation. Our federal and local governments respond by increasing the size of our police, and other security forces, and the overloaded courts fill our prisons with millions of people who have committed the smallest of drug offences. Our police look more and more like military personnel every day, dressed in full combat gear and driving armored vehicles with an ever-increasing threatening posture, and it is now all too common for minor offenders or suspects to be gunned down in the street by trigger-happy police. Since 9/11, under the guise of Homeland Security, our civil liberties have been gradually eroded and the protection of our privacy seems like a distant memory. We listen to the continual mantra of the "War on Terror" and let our leaders do whatever they want with their military build up and our warmongering around the world, because we are told that "freedom isn't free" and it is all necessary for our protection.

After

In Nutopia there is minimal crime because the common causes of crime such as weapons, drugs, and money do not exist. There is no poverty or homelessness and no one goes hungry or lives on the streets, so all the traditional stresses put on society that cause crime are not there. There are no police on the streets causing tensions or harassing innocent people, and the ubiquitous CCTV coverage in all Nutopia communities means that even if there is a crime, it is captured on video, so it is foolish to even attempt it. Nutopia does not have a military or any armed forces because all Nutopia communities are equal in every respect so there are no borders to defend or countries to invade, or resources to steal.
